The multicultural nature of classrooms is a significant challenge in many European countries. The teacher’s job is all the more difficult because he/she is usually not sufficiently prepared to deal with a classroom context with pupils having a migrant background, coming from countries with different cultures and different languages.
Teaching materials focusing on migrant students do exist, but mostly for languages, not for mathematics. Mathematics teachers feel the need for training and materials which reflect the requirements of their students in terms of linguistic and cultural differences.
In the project Math4Migrants, seven partner institutions from four European countries developed ready-to-use teaching units on a large variety of mathematical topics. They also developed concepts for units, based on which teachers can create concrete teaching units that are tailormade for the use in their own classrooms.
The project partners offer training activities for pre- and in-service teachers where these materials are presented and can be tried out. Case studies of actual uses, and guidelines on how to create suitable teaching units out of the given concepts complement the teaching materials.
With this offer, the project group aims to support mathematics teachers in their important work with students with a migrant background.
